Kitchen Cleansing: The Perfect Time to Get Rid of “Stuff”

Whether you celebrate the holidays (Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza) with a lot to do or whether you celebrate them quietly, now would be the perfect time to go through your refrigerator, pantry closet, and/or cabinets and get rid of “stuff”.
Here are six (6) tips to help you with this task:
- Wherever you store food, look at what you have and discard anything with an expiration date.
- If you find food that doesn’t have an expiration date and you decide you no longer want it, donate it to a local food pantry.
- Put like items with like items – canned goods with canned goods, soup with soup, pasta with pasta, snacks with snacks, cereal with cereal, etc.
- Make sure your storage containers (whether they are glass or plastic) have lids and bottoms that fit together. Discard or recycle anything that doesn’t have the matching lid or bottom. You are wasting valuable storage space keeping lids and bottoms that don’t match.
- Go through your pots, pans and baking appliances to make sure the pots and pans have lids and that the pots, pans, and baking appliances are in good enough shape in which to cook/bake. Do any of these items have burnt-on food that can’t be removed or are actually burnt?
- When storing leftovers in the refrigerator, put them in one spot and towards the front. It’ll be easier to throw the leftovers out if you haven’t eaten them when you know where they are all kept. Who wants a scientific experiment growing in the back of their refrigerator?
If you only have time to do one thing, at least get rid of any expired food. Doesn’t this sound like one good way to start the December holiday season?
