A Solution for One Corner or One Pile of Clutter

Are you feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Does it look like those piles of papers, clothes, toys, laundry, or magazines will never go away? In fact, do they seem to grow right in front of your very eyes? If so, you are not alone.
When you don’t have any kind of system or process set up and/or when life gets in the way, those piles have a tendency to get bigger and bigger. To keep your stress levels under control while trying to organize, let’s break down the tasks and just deal with one corner or one pile. If you see all the clutter, try this trick – take an empty paper towel roll and look through it. That is the only pile for you to work on for this exercise.
I am going to use the example of one pile of paper on your kitchen counter or table. We are going to follow the “SPCA” steps from my Brilliant Blueprint.
Steps 1 and 2 – Sort, putting like with like, and Purge. Set up 3 bags and label them recycle, shred, and trash. Go through the pile and immediately put what needs to be recycled, shredded, and trashed in its appropriate bag. Put what needs to be filed off to the side and what needs to be acted on off to the side as well. Try to touch the piece of paper only one time. If you have to act on something but can’t do it right then, designate an area and put the item there for a later date.
Step 3 – Containerize and label, if necessary. When working with paper, you can either “containerize” the paper in file folders or notebooks, or if you don’t want any paper around, you can scan the documents.
Step 4 – Assign a home. This is the most useful step of the process. Once you designate a “home” for the item”, anything similar can be put in the same place. The result is you won’t have to search high and low for something you already know you have.
These steps can be followed for any corner or pile. It doesn’t have to be just paper. This amazing thing is that these work with anything for which you want to find a solution for your clutter.
In 4 simple, but not always easy steps, you can have one corner or one pile de-cluttered and organized. Take a break, go do something totally different, and when you are ready, tackle another corner or pile. What corner or pile are you going to work on now?
