Three (3) Tips for Remembering
Does this sound familiar? I hear this many times from my clients, and in fact, this sign was actually hanging in the home of one of my client’s. I couldn’t resist taking the picture since this seems to be a common theme amongst people who are getting organized.
So, the question is how do we resolve this issue when we are assigning homes for things? While we are trying to incorporate new habits into our lives, we may need to do some fun things to remember. Below are three (3) ideas that might help you to remember where you put things.
- You’ve rearranged the drawers in any of your rooms. Put post-it notes on the outside of the drawers with what the contents of that drawer are. This may not be the most slightly, but it will help you to remember what’s in what drawer for a little while. Once you feel comfortable that you can remember, remove the post-it.
- You rearranged the contents on shelves in closets, and you want your family to remember where items need to be returned after they’ve been taken out. Use any kind of labeler and stick the labels on the shelves for easy viewing. If you don’t want them to be permanent, there are some that can be removed without removing paint, so look for them if you want the label to stick securely but can be removed easily. Here’s the link to a product, Full Adhesive Roll, that is not costly or complicated but is very efficient: http://www.post-it.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/PostItNA/Home/Products/?rt=rs&from=typeAhead&N=3294647059+4327
- You’ve either developed a filing system or re-did what you already had. Put a master list together you can easily look at rather than rifling through the drawers. You may want to even hang it right on the file cabinet or whatever container you are using for easy access.
Keep only those items that add meaning to your life. Why hold on to something that has no value to you? It’s just another item that can get in the way of you remembering where the important things are in your life.
What ideas have you incorporated that help you remember where you’ve put things? I, and I am sure my other readers, would love to know.
