How Many Books Do You Have and Need to Keep?
In the past month, several of my clients decided that they wanted one of their organizing projects to be cleaning out their book shelves. They realized they had too many books and the shelves were beginning to buckle. We always had a good laugh when we found the organizing books and articles.
In fact, my car was very weighed down right before the holidays with all these books they decided to donate, which I found out could go to my local library. My clients like knowing their books, both hardback and paperback, can be donated to local libraries and not be thrown into a landfill. When these local libraries have book sales, the money they make goes right back to the library. And, my clients are happy that their books will be used and enjoyed by others. Talk about a win-win solution.
I have to chuckle because my book shelves (pictured above) need some help as well. This 4-step process that I use with my clients is what I am going to follow for myself.
- Start on the top shelf and work yourself down.
- Decide what books you really want to keep and what you want to donate. Are you really going to read that book again? Will you ever read that book? Is that travel book very old? Of course, if the book is in really bad shape (dirty, ripped), you’ll have to either throw it away or recycle it if it is a paperback.
- Put like books with like books. You may want to categorize the books according to subject, author, and/or both.
- Align them by height, going from tallest to shortest, if you really want to get crazy.
Voila! The books shelves are de-cluttered and organized. I am ready to tackle my book shelves project. What are you going to do with your myriad of books?
