For Keeping a Loved One at Home
Many of us experience some kind of care-taking responsibilities of a child, parent, relative, or friend at some point in our lives. Some are directly involved, while others are indirectly involved.
I had a 99-year old father who did not live close to me however, I was the one responsible for making sure he had the best care possible. We were very lucky to be able to abide by his wishes and keep him in the house in which I grew up. I call this kind of care-taking indirect. I was not the one actually doing the care-taking, but I was the one who had to coordinate all the services and deal with any problems that arose.
I realized the generic checklists that are provided by the home health care agencies are just that – generic. But, as my father’s care got more complicated, a more detailed checklist had to be developed. This was especially true when a substitute aide came to take care of him when the permanent aide needed to take time off.
Not only did it help me better understand the care that was needed, I also wanted to make sure that my father was well-attended to. This is the checklist I developed. BBs Clutter Solutions – Home Health Checklist As you can see, this is not a generic checklist; it was totally designed for his situation.
After I developed this checklist, I put it in a plastic sleeve, protecting and making sure it was very accessible. The home health agency told me they wished every family did things like this. I did this for my father.
In addition, make sure the caretakers are following what you’ve documented. Just because you wrote it down, doesn’t mean it is going to be followed.
When you are in a similar situation, what are you going to do to make sure your child, parent, relative, or friend gets the care that is needed solely for them?
